Australia Dessert Morning tea

The Tim Tam: Australian Bickie Legend

That’s a cookie for all you non-Australians. It’s short for biscuit. Funny, because when I hear the word biscuit I think of dry, tasteless snacks for young children or those greyish-brown treats… for well-behaving dogs. Oh, and sometimes I even think of American breakfast biscuits, similar to tea biscuits or scones.

But enough about biscuit terminology. Let’s get right down to it:

The Tim Tam is the ultimate chocolate treat.

Perfect in the morning, in the afternoon or as an easy something sweet for dessert. They should be required in every cupboard as a staple, a lifeline, available at anytime for a pick me up, anytime the mood strikes.

Available in more flavours than any sweets lover could imagine, let’s start with the basics. Tim Tams are a chocolate cookie stuffed with a creamy chocolate filling and covered in sweet chocolatey goodness. Add a hot drink for dipping and you’ll find yourself in the middle of a warm sea of rich, sweet, chocolate heaven. Just close your eyes and let it wash over you.

Everyone has their own favourite flavour (options include original, double coat, dark chocolate, turkish delight, white chocolate and my favourite, caramel) and they will defend their favourite the way you would support your favourite sports team or home city. There’s no messing around with these bickies–they are the real deal. According to Arnott’s Australia, the maker of Tim Tams, 1 in every 2 households has a packet of these bickies in the cabinet and close to 400 million bickies are eaten each year, worldwide. Woah.

What really explains the power of this bickie is its place in the life of Australians everywhere. If you’ve ever had the chance to visit Oz, you’ve no doubt been introduced to the ritual of the Tim Tam Slam, something of an initiation into local culture. Bite off opposing corners of the cookie and use it as a straw in your tea or coffee. The moment you can taste your tea through the chocolate “straw” push the whole cookie into your mouth in one deft motion. The result is a mouthful of hot, soft, chocolatey cream. I urge you to try it. You won’t believe it until you try it.

Tell me about your Tim Tam experience. Do you agree or am I the only one who loves these things?

  • Errrrr…… A friend once told me in confidence that he uses a Tim Tam as a straw – just the way you describe- but chooses to suck Port through the TimTam after dinner………Only when he’s camping. Only when he’s camping……….

    • Ah yes, the things you will only do while sleeping under the stars. For me that’s drinking Port:) And don’t worry, I’ll keep your friend’s secret.

  • I was just reading a post on another blog where she crushed them to use as part of a dessert. I wonder if I could find them on Amazon. Hmmm, I think that will be a quicker way to taste them than getting my brood to Australia.
